“Community Housing Regulation, Manage the Risks-Develop the Industry” Adelaide workshop 2004

Participants and speakers - during a brainstorming exercise - 'Why do we need regulation'

Following the publication of the “Community Housing Regulation, Manage the Risks-Develop the Industry” research paper last December, the Forum held a workshop in Adelaide on 23rd July 2004.

The workshop jointly presented by NCHF and the South Australian Community Housing Authority (SACHA), was attended by 45 delegates from around Australia, and chaired by Brendan Moran.

The Purpose for the Workshop was:

To take stock of three different regulatory regimes around Australia - NSW, Queensland and South Australia- given the different approach taken by each of these States towards regulation.
To present community and government perspectives on each of the regulatory frameworks, and explore strengths and weaknesses of different regulatory regimes in taking the community housing sector into the future.
To examine key themes raised in the paper, and in particular the advantages of taking a risk management and sector development perspective to regulation, instead of compliance and risk avoidance approach.
To draw some conclusions that may be useful to States and Territories currently considering different options around regulation.

“‘Corporate Governance in Community Housing’, managing the challenges posed by growth”
Melbourne workshop 2004

Governance Workshop participants

In an attempt to continue facilitating debate on issues of key importance to the community housing sector, the forum recently held a very successful national workshop on Corporate Governance. The workshop was held in Melbourne on the 3rd September 04, attended by over 55 delegates from around Australia, representing government, non government and the private sector.

The workshop provided a very good opportunity to promote the forum’s latest publication ‘Corporate Governance in Community Housing’, managing the challenges posed by growth, August 04.

The workshop focused on the challenges that growth – be it in terms of size or business complexity- can pose to community housing providers, and some of the implications that growth may pose on corporate governance structures. Participants engaged in lively and stimulating discussion, triggered by presentations from thought provoking presenters coming from a range of diverse perspectives.

Speakers in the afternoon session provided an overview of different corporate governance models currently operating around Australia and answer prolific questions from participants during a panel discussion.

The workshop was chaired by Lynne Ready, Chair of the National Community Housing Forum and Acting Director of the Office of Community Housing in NSW. Lynne made opening remarks to the day, welcoming participants, followed by Cristina Pebaque, Forum’s CEO.
