	Financing Community Housing
	Introducing private finance into the community housing system has been a subject of discussion for some time. A range of projects have successfully used alternative sources of finance to develop community housing stock, however, systemic structures and processes have rarely developed beyond the research or, in some cases, pilot stage.
	The aims of the 'Financing Community Housing' seminar (May 2000) were to examine:
		the recent history and political context of private finance and community housing;
		the opportunities and limitations inherent in the initiatives to date;
		action that can be taken by the community housing sector
		what governments need to do to assist the development of a system of private finance.
	Following the seminar, the NCHF prepared a discussion paper which considers:
		how conducive the current political and policy climate is to the use of private finance;
		the success of recent initiatives; and
		the next practical steps that must be taken by governments, the community housing sector and the finance industry if community housing is to achieve the expanded use of private finance.
	A paper titled Private Finance and Community Housing: Recent Initiatives was prepared by George Porter of Brian Elton and Associates, as a briefing for the seminar.
