About the Awards

The 2001 National Awards presentation dinner was held in Brisbane on the 23rd October - the evening of the Community Housing Federation of Australia’s community housing day, and the night before the National Housing Conference, Our Homes Our Communities Our Future.

Over 160 people from across the country, as well as international guests, all came together to celebrate the presentation of the national awards and the achievements of the sector.

This year over 40 entries from organisations across 5 states and 1 territory were received. The entries reflected the broad ranging work of the sector with applications from housing associations, co-operatives, local government, church groups, regional bodies and national non-government organisations and Indigenous organisations. The entries illustrated the range of exciting and innovative work being undertaken in the sector.

This past year saw the formalisation of the Awards with the establishment of a National Awards Council. The Council aims to plant the Awards firmly in the culture of the community housing sector and to celebrate and bring into the public arena the excellent work that is being undertaken to house people across the nation.

The members of the Council were:
Denise Dwyer - NSW Standards and Accreditation Unit
Carolyn Gale - Office of Housing, Victoria
Alan Fairley - City of Adelaide, SA
Maria Demasi - Community Housing Council of SA
Chris Gould - Bayside Housing (tenant representative)
Mathew Woodward, MACH, SA

The 2001 awards were presented by Karen Barnett, Executive Officer of St Kilda Housing Association, VIC - 2000 winner of the Award for Overall Excellence in Community Housing; The Hon. Robert Schwarten, Qld Minister for Public Works and Housing; Richard Kitson, President of the UK Chartered Institute of Housing; and Gordon Tonkin, Manager Heath Lambert Group - Official sponsor of the 2001 Award for excellence in organisational management.

The 2001 National Award for Excellence in Innovation caused quite a lot of discussion by the Judging Panel on what exactly innovation means - particularly when we are judging such a diverse range of organisations.

The category information sheets states that ‘innovation means more than just doing some new. It means solving a problem in a different and demonstrably better way to the way that solutions have been found in the past.’ In no doubt, those short listed for this category were innovative organisations. They were doing something new - however the judges acknowledged there were several organisations doing the ‘something new’ in the same way. To be truly innovative a project should be unique. For this reason, 2 highly commended projects were awarded only.

The challenge is open to the community housing sector to nominate for that truly unique project in the next awards. We all know that there are organisations out there doing groundbreaking work. The National Awards Council strongly encourages these organisations to consider nominating for this very special category next time.

The National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance was not presented due to the small number of entries.
